Managing success is a challenge. What do top company use? Many are using the The Balanced Scorecard. The BSC concept was created by Dr Robert S. Kaplan and Dr. David P. Norton in 1992. The Balanced Scorecard allows organizations to implement strategy quickly and effectively by integrating a measurement with management.
In my research I have found that many of the top Fortune 1000 and major government departments use The Balanced Scorecard including: American Airlines, American Cancer Society, Amgen, Anheuser-Busch, Avery Dennison, Bank of America, Bayer, Best Buy, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Boys and Girls Club of America, Canadian Automobile Association, Canadian Department of National Defence, Canon, Caterpillar, Coca Cola, DaimlerChrysler, Defense Logistics Agency, Department of Commerce, Eli Lilly, Hewlett Packard, Kaiser Permanente, Microsoft, Motorola, NASA, New York Stock Exchange, Nextel Communications, Nokia, Northwestern Mutual, Pfizer, Price Waterhouse Coopers, RR Donnelly, Saatchi & Saatchi, SAS Institute, Seagate, T. Rowe Price, TIAA-CREF, US Army, Verizon and thousands of others.
It is used by institutions like the Department of Energy. DOE explains that The Balanced Scorecard approach takes an organization's vision and measures it against 4 performance indicators: Financial, Customer, Internal Business Processes, and Learning and Growth.
Indicators are used to measure progress as well as the long term drivers of success. Through the BSC, an organization monitors both its current performance (finances, customer satisfaction, and business process results) and its efforts to improve processes, motivate and educate employees, and enhance information systems.
